The Australian Psychological Society (APS) is a professional association that allows psychologists to learn and share resources around improving mental health and wellbeing. We were approached to produce a new animated video for their YouTube channel that could be used as a resource by psychologists and their patients.

Our team has spent the last year working to reinvigorate their social media accounts including their YouTube channel. With a fresh new brand and more eyes on their social media accounts, the client was excited to create new content that could be used and shared by people within their organisation. The client and our content team came up with an idea for a simple animated guided mindfulness exercise that psychologists can use for themselves, or share with their patients.

The PROCESS

Before diving into the design, we researched extensively on the importance of mangroves to the Papuan ecosystem and how mangrove deforestation has detrimental impacts on both the environment as well as the community at large. We also looked at other initiatives in Papua New Guinea that similarly focus on environmental conservation and education to examine the visual language they used to connect with their local community.

The team organised an onsite assessment of the resort to talk to the owners of the business and gain a sense of what services are offered to guests, the demographic of the visitors and their ideas for the future of Koke Hanua.

We explored local museums, art galleries and architecture, providing ample inspiration on how we might incorporate elements of local Papuan art into the design and visual direction of this project.

Before we began this project, we discussed initial ideas with the content team to see what they had in mind. They already had a general idea of what they wanted to include in the script, including a brief explanation of what stress is and what the common causes for increased stress are. They also wanted to incorporate a boat floating about on screen to guide the viewer into a calm and relaxed state as they participate in the guided meditation.

With these thoughts in mind, I began to look for inspiration online to see how we can visualise the script with the ocean theme we have already established. I also began to look at how other mental health organisations go about visualising more complex psychology terms.

With all this research in mind, I began to experiment and storyboard the video.

With a lot of feedback and guidance, I was able to produce the final storyboard which was beautifully brought to life through animation. Watch the video below to see how it turned out.

After numerous sketches and typographic explorations, we developed our final design. We embraced the imperfect and chose to visualise our logo with a paper-cut illustration style. This style gave the design an abstracted and hand-generated feel, reflecting the art style of Papuan art. Each letter of the logo represents a different goal of Koke Hanua and combine to tell the story of how they hope their exhibition will empower the community with knowledge that will bring incremental change to the environment.
