Located in Caution Bay, Papua New Guinea, Koke Hanua was originally a resort that catered for events such as weddings and corporate meetings. However, with the help of Total Energies, Koke Hanua is shifting the resort into a mangrove conservation and exhibition space. This initiative hopes to educate both the general public as well as tourists on the importance of the mangroves in maintaining a blooming ecosystem.

The goal of this project was to develop a new logo and brand system that spoke to Koke Hanua's new mission and values: environmental sustainability, education and community. However, with this business being located in Papua New Guinea, we had to conduct extensive background research before we began designing in order to better understand the Papuan culture and ecosystem as well as ensure we were aligned with the business owners on their goals with this transformation.

The PROCESS
Before diving into the design, we researched extensively on the importance of mangroves to the Papuan ecosystem and how mangrove deforestation has detrimental impacts on both the environment as well as the community at large. We also looked at other initiatives in Papua New Guinea that similarly focus on environmental conservation and education to examine the visual language they used to connect with their local community.
The team organised an onsite assessment of the resort to talk to the owners of the business and gain a sense of what services are offered to guests, the demographic of the visitors and their ideas for the future of Koke Hanua.
We explored local museums, art galleries and architecture, providing ample inspiration on how we might incorporate elements of local Papuan art into the design and visual direction of this project.

After numerous sketches and typographic explorations, we developed our final design. We chose to visualise our logo in an abstracted and hand-generated illustration, reflecting a similar style to Papuan art. Each letter of the logo represents a different goal of Koke Hanua and combine to tell the story of how they hope their exhibition will empower the community with knowledge that will bring incremental change to the environment.

After numerous sketches and typographic explorations, we developed our final design. We embraced the imperfect and chose to visualise our logo with a paper-cut illustration style. This style gave the design an abstracted and hand-generated feel, reflecting the art style of Papuan art.
